And Pharaoh's cup
was in my hand:
and
I took the grapes,
and pressed them
into Pharaoh's cup,
and I
gave
the cup
into Pharaoh's hand.
Binding his foal
unto the vine,
and his ass's colt
unto the choice vine;
he washed his garments
in wine,
and his clothes
in the blood
of grapes:
Do not drink wine
nor strong drink,
thou,
nor thy sons
with thee,
when
ye go
into the tabernacle
of the congregation,
lest
ye die:
it shall be
a statute for
ever throughout your generations:
Speak
unto the children
of Israel,
and
say unto them,
When either man
or woman
shall separate themselves
to vow a vow
of a Nazarite,
to separate themselves
unto the LORD:
He shall separate himself
from wine
and strong drink,
and shall drink no vinegar
of wine,
or vinegar
of strong drink,
neither shall
he drink any liquor
of grapes,
nor eat
moist grapes,
or dried.
And
thou shalt bestow
that money
for whatsoever
thy soul
lusteth after,
for oxen,
or for sheep,
or for wine,
or for strong drink,
or for whatsoever
thy soul desireth:
and
thou shalt eat there
before the LORD thy God,
and
thou shalt rejoice,
thou,
and thine household,
Ye have not eaten bread,
neither have
ye drunk wine
or strong drink:
that ye
might know that
I am the LORD
your God.
Israel
then shall dwell
in safety alone:
the fountain
of Jacob
shall be
upon a land
of corn and wine;
also his heavens
shall drop
down dew.
They did work
wilily,
and went
and made
as if
they had been
ambassadors,
and took old sacks
upon their asses,
and wine bottles,
old,
and rent,
and bound up;
And these bottles
of wine,
which we filled,
were new;
and,
behold,
they be rent:
and these
our garments
and our shoes
are become old
by reason
of the very long journey.
Now therefore beware,
I pray thee,
and drink not wine
nor strong drink,
and eat not
any unclean thing:
Until I come
and take you
away to a land like
your own land,
a land
of corn and wine,
a land
of bread
and vineyards,
a land
of oil olive and
of honey,
that ye
may live,
and not die:
and hearken not
unto Hezekiah,
when
he persuadeth you,
saying,
The LORD
will deliver us.
Storehouses
also for the increase
of corn,
and wine,
and oil;
and stalls for all manner
of beasts,
and cotes
for flocks.
For the children
of Israel
and the children
of Levi
shall bring
the offering
of the corn,
of the new wine,
and the oil,
unto the chambers,
where are the vessels
of the sanctuary,
and the priests
that minister,
and the porters,
and the singers:
and
we will not forsake
the house
of our God.
Behold,
my belly
is as wine
which hath
no vent;
it is ready
to burst like new bottles.
Thou hast put gladness
in my heart,
more than in the time
that their corn
and their wine increased.
He causeth
the grass
to grow
for the cattle,
and herb
for the service
of man:
that he
may bring forth food
out of the earth;
And wine
that maketh glad
the heart of man,
and oil
to make his face
to shine,
and bread which
strengtheneth man's heart.
For they
eat the bread
of wickedness,
and drink
the wine
of violence.
Wine is a mocker,
strong drink
is raging:
and whosoever
is deceived
thereby is not wise.
He that
loveth
pleasure
shall be
a poor man:
he that
loveth wine
and oil
shall not be rich.
Who hath woe?
who hath sorrow?
who hath
contentions?
who hath babbling?
who hath
wounds without cause?
who hath redness
of eyes?
They that
tarry long
at the wine;
they that
go
to seek mixed wine.
Look not
thou
upon the wine
when it
is red,
when it
giveth
his colour
in the cup,
when it
moveth itself aright.
At the last
it biteth like
a serpent,
and stingeth like
an adder.
It is not
for kings,
O Lemuel,
it is not
for kings
to drink wine;
nor
for princes strong drink:
Lest
they drink,
and forget
the law,
and pervert
the judgment
of any of the afflicted.
Give strong drink
unto him that is ready
to perish,
and wine
unto those
that be
of heavy hearts.
Let him drink,
and forget
his poverty,
and remember
his misery no more.
I sought
in mine heart
to give myself
unto wine,
yet acquainting mine heart
with wisdom;
and to lay
hold on folly,
till I
might see
what was that good
for the sons
of men,
which they
should do
under the heaven all
the days
of their life.
Then I
looked
on all
the works
that my hands
had wrought,
and on the labour
that
I had laboured to do:
and,
behold,
all was vanity
and vexation
of spirit,
and there was
no profit
under the sun.
I would lead thee,
and bring thee
into my mother's house,
who would instruct me:
I would cause thee
to drink
of spiced wine
of the juice
of my pomegranate.
Woe unto them that rise
up early
in the morning,
that they
may follow
strong drink;
that continue until night,
till wine
inflame them!
Woe unto them that
are mighty
to drink wine,
and men
of strength
to mingle strong drink:
They shall not drink wine
with a song;
strong drink
shall be bitter
to them that drink it.
And in this mountain
shall
the LORD of hosts
make
unto all
people a feast
of fat things,
a feast
of wines
on the lees,
of fat things
full of marrow,
of wines
on the lees
well refined.
Woe to the crown
of pride,
to the drunkards
of Ephraim,
whose glorious beauty
is a fading flower,
which are on the head
of the fat valleys
of them that
are overcome
with wine!
The crown
of pride,
the drunkards
of Ephraim,
shall be trodden
under feet:
But
they also have erred
through wine,
and
through strong drink
are out of the way;
the priest
and the prophet
have erred
through strong drink,
they are swallowed up
of wine,
they are
out of the way
through strong drink;
they err
in vision,
they stumble
in judgment.
Come ye,
say they,
I will fetch wine,
and
we will fill ourselves
with strong drink;
and to morrow
shall be
as this day,
and much more abundant.
Therefore thou
shalt speak
unto them this word;
Thus
saith
the LORD God
of Israel,
Every
bottle
shall be filled
with wine:
and
they shall say
unto thee,
Do we
not certainly know
that every bottle
shall be filled
with wine?
Mine heart
within me is broken
because
of the prophets;
all my bones shake;
I am like
a drunken man,
and like a man
whom wine
hath overcome,
because
of the LORD,
and
because
of the words
of his holiness.
Go unto the house
of the Rechabites,
and
speak unto them,
and bring them
into the house
of the LORD,
into one
of the chambers,
and give them wine
to drink.
Then
I took Jaazaniah
the son
of Jeremiah,
the son
of Habaziniah,
and his brethren,
and all
his sons,
and the whole house
of the Rechabites;
And
I brought them
into the house
of the LORD,
into the chamber
of the sons
of Hanan,
the son
of Igdaliah,
a man of God,
which was by the chamber
of the princes,
which was above
the chamber
of Maaseiah
the son
of Shallum,
the keeper
of the door:
And I set
before the sons
of the house
of the Rechabites
pots full of wine,
and cups,
and
I said unto them,
Drink ye wine.
But they said,
We will drink no wine:
for Jonadab the son
of Rechab
our father
commanded us,
saying,
Ye shall drink
no wine,
neither ye,
nor your sons
for ever:
Neither shall
ye build house,
nor sow seed,
nor plant
vineyard,
nor have any:
but all
your days
ye shall dwell
in tents;
that ye
may live many days
in the land
where ye
be strangers.
Thus
have
we obeyed
the voice
of Jonadab the son
of Rechab our father
in all
that
he hath charged us,
to drink
no wine all
our days,
we,
our wives,
our sons,
nor our daughters;
Nor
to build houses
for us
to dwell in:
neither have
we vineyard,
nor field,
nor seed:
But
we have
dwelt in tents,
and have obeyed,
and done according to all
that Jonadab our father
commanded us.
The words
of Jonadab
the son
of Rechab,
that he
commanded
his sons
not
to drink wine,
are performed;
for unto this day
they drink none,
but obey
their father's commandment:
notwithstanding
I have spoken
unto you,
rising early
and speaking;
but
ye hearkened not unto me.
And Jeremiah
said
unto the house
of the Rechabites,
Thus
saith
the LORD
of hosts,
the God
of Israel;
Because
ye have obeyed
the commandment
of Jonadab your father,
and kept all
his precepts,
and done
according
unto all
that
he hath commanded you:
Therefore thus
saith the LORD
of hosts,
the God
of Israel;
Jonadab
the son
of Rechab
shall not want a man
to stand
before me
for ever.
As for me,
behold,
I will dwell
at Mizpah,
to serve the Chaldeans,
which will come unto us:
but ye,
gather ye wine,
and summer
fruits,
and oil,
and put them
in your vessels,
and dwell
in your cities
that ye have taken.
Even all
the Jews
returned
out of all places
whither
they were driven,
and came
to the land
of Judah,
to Gedaliah,
unto Mizpah,
and gathered wine
and summer fruits very much.
Therefore,
behold,
the days come,
saith the LORD,
that I
will send
unto him wanderers,
that shall cause him
to wander,
and shall empty
his vessels,
and break
their bottles.
Neither shall
any priest
drink wine,
when
they enter
into the inner court.
And the king
appointed them
a daily provision
of the king's meat,
and of the wine
which he drank:
so nourishing them three years,
that at the end
thereof
they might stand
before the king.
But Daniel
purposed
in his heart
that he
would not defile himself
with the portion
of the king's meat,
nor with the wine
which he drank:
therefore he
requested
of the prince
of the eunuchs
that
he might not defile himself.
Thus Melzar
took away
the portion
of their meat,
and the wine that
they should drink;
and gave them pulse.
I ate no pleasant bread,
neither came flesh
nor wine
in my mouth,
neither did
I anoint myself
at all,
till three whole weeks
were fulfilled.
For she
did not know
that I
gave her corn,
and wine,
and oil,
and multiplied
her silver
and gold,
which they
prepared
for Baal.
And the earth
shall hear
the corn,
and the wine,
and the oil;
and
they shall hear
Jezreel.
Whoredom
and wine
and new wine
take away
the heart.
And
they have not cried
unto me
with their heart,
when they
howled
upon their beds:
they assemble themselves
for corn
and wine,
and
they
rebel against me.
Awake,
ye drunkards,
and weep;
and howl,
all
ye drinkers
of wine,
because
of the new wine;
for it
is cut off
from your mouth.
And the floors
shall be
full of wheat,
and the vats
shall overflow
with wine and oil.
And
they have cast lots
for my people;
and have given
a boy
for an harlot,
and sold
a girl
for wine,
that they
might drink.
That drink wine
in bowls,
and anoint themselves
with the chief ointments:
but
they are not grieved
for the affliction
of Joseph.
Yea also,
because
he transgresseth by wine,
he is a proud man,
neither keepeth at home,
who enlargeth his desire
as hell,
and is as death,
and cannot be satisfied,
but gathereth
unto him all nations,
and heapeth unto him all people:
And I
called for
a drought
upon the land,
and
upon the mountains,
and
upon the corn,
and
upon the new wine,
and upon the oil,
and upon that
which the ground
bringeth forth,
and upon men,
and upon cattle,
and
upon all
the labour
of the hands.
For how great
is his goodness,
and how great
is his beauty!
corn shall make
the young men cheerful,
and new wine
the maids.
And
they of Ephraim
shall be like
a mighty man,
and their heart
shall rejoice as
through wine:
yea,
their children
shall see it,
and be glad;
their heart
shall rejoice
in the LORD.
Neither do men
put new wine
into old bottles:
else the bottles break,
and the wine
runneth out,
and the bottles perish:
but
they put new wine
into new bottles,
and both
are preserved.
And
he took the cup,
and gave thanks,
and gave it
to them,
saying,
Drink
ye all of it;
For this
is my blood
of the new testament,
which is
shed for many
for the remission
of sins.
But
I say unto you,
I will not drink
henceforth
of this fruit
of the vine,
until that day
when
I drink it new
with you
in my Father's kingdom.
And straightway one
of them ran,
and took a spunge,
and filled it
with vinegar,
and put it
on a reed,
and gave him
to drink.
And
he took the cup,
and
when
he had given thanks,
he gave it
to them:
and
they all drank of it.
And
they gave him
to drink
wine mingled
with myrrh:
but
he received it not.
For he
shall be great
in the sight
of the Lord,
and shall drink neither wine
nor strong drink;
and
he shall be filled
with the Holy Ghost,
even from his mother's womb.
And no man
putteth
new wine
into old bottles;
else the new wine
will burst
the bottles,
and be spilled,
and the bottles
shall perish.
But new wine
must be put
into new bottles;
and both
are preserved.
And
he took the cup,
and gave thanks,
and said,
Take this,
and divide it
among yourselves:
For I
say unto you,
I will not drink
of the fruit
of the vine,
until the kingdom
of God
shall come.
And
he took bread,
and gave thanks,
and brake it,
and
gave unto them,
saying,
This is my body
which is given
for you:
this do
in remembrance of me.
Likewise
also the cup
after supper,
saying,
This cup
is the new testament
in my blood,
which is
shed for you.
And the soldiers
also mocked him,
coming to him,
and offering him vinegar,
When the ruler
of the feast
had tasted
the water
that was made wine,
and knew not whence
it was:
(but the servants
which drew
the water knew;)
the governor
of the feast
called the bridegroom,
And
saith unto him,
Every man
at the beginning
doth set forth
good wine;
and
when men
have well drunk,
then that which
is worse:
but
thou hast kept
the good wine
until now.
Now there was set
a vessel full of vinegar:
and they
filled
a spunge
with vinegar,
and put it
upon hyssop,
and put it
to his mouth.
It is good neither
to eat flesh,
nor to drink wine,
nor any thing
whereby
thy brother stumbleth,
or is offended,
or is made weak.
And be not drunk
with wine,
wherein is excess;
but be filled
with the Spirit;
Drink no longer water,
but use
a little wine
for thy
stomach's sake and thine
often infirmities.
The aged women likewise,
that they
be
in behaviour
as becometh holiness,
not false accusers,
not given
to much wine,
teachers
of good things;
