Yet the LORD
hath not given
you an heart
to perceive,
and eyes to see,
and ears to hear,
unto this day.
For they are
a nation void
of counsel,
neither is there
any understanding
in them.
And she said,
The Philistines
be upon thee,
Samson.
And
he awoke
out of his sleep,
and said,
I will go out
as at other times
before,
and shake myself.
And
he wist
not
that the LORD
was departed from him.
Therefore they
say
unto God,
Depart from us;
for we
desire not the knowledge
of thy ways.
And thou sayest,
How doth
God know?
can he
judge
through the dark cloud?
Thick clouds
are
a covering
to him,
that he
seeth not;
and
he walketh in the circuit
of heaven.
His ways
are always grievous;
thy judgments
are far above
out of his sight:
as for all his enemies,
he puffeth at them.
The fool
hath said
in his heart,
There is no God.
They are corrupt,
they have done
abominable works,
there is none
that doeth good.
Have all the workers
of iniquity no knowledge?
who eat
up my people
as they
eat bread,
and call not
upon the LORD.
So foolish
was I,
and ignorant:
I was as a beast
before thee.
They know not,
neither will
they understand;
they walk on
in darkness:
all
the foundations
of the earth
are out of course.
A brutish man
knoweth not;
neither doth
a fool
understand this.
Yet they say,
The LORD
shall not see,
neither shall
the God of Jacob
regard it.
Forty years long
was I
grieved
with this generation,
and said,
It is
a people that
do err
in their heart,
and
they have not known
my ways:
Open thou
mine eyes,
that I
may behold wondrous things
out of thy law.
The fear
of the LORD
is the beginning
of knowledge:
but fools
despise wisdom
and instruction.
How long,
ye simple ones,
will
ye love
simplicity?
and the scorners
delight
in their scorning,
and fools
hate knowledge?
For that
they hated
knowledge,
and did not choose
the fear
of the LORD:
The way
of the wicked
is as darkness:
they know not
at what they stumble.
The lips
of the righteous feed many:
but fools
die
for want
of wisdom.
Poverty
and shame
shall be
to him
that refuseth instruction:
but he
that
regardeth
reproof shall be honoured.
There is
a way which
seemeth
right
unto a man,
but the end
thereof are the ways
of death.
Wherefore is there a price
in the hand
of a fool
to get wisdom,
seeing
he hath
no heart to it?
Also,
that the soul
be
without knowledge,
it is not good;
and he
that
hasteth with his feet sinneth.
Evil men
understand not
judgment:
but they that
seek the LORD
understand all things.
I applied
mine heart
to know,
and to search,
and to
seek out wisdom,
and the reason
of things,
and
to know the wickedness
of folly,
even of foolishness
and madness:
The ox
knoweth his owner,
and the ass
his master's crib:
but Israel
doth not know,
my people
doth not consider.
Therefore my people
are gone
into captivity,
because
they have
no knowledge:
and their honourable men
are famished,
and their multitude
dried up with thirst.
Woe unto them that call
evil good,
and good evil;
that put darkness
for light,
and light
for darkness;
that put bitter
for sweet,
and sweet
for bitter!
Woe unto them that
are wise
in their own eyes,
and prudent
in their own sight!
And he said,
Go,
and tell
this people,
Hear ye indeed,
but understand not;
and see
ye indeed,
but perceive not.
Make the heart
of this people fat,
and make
their ears heavy,
and shut
their eyes;
lest
they see
with their eyes,
and hear
with their ears,
and understand
with their heart,
and convert,
and be healed.
The people that
walked
in darkness
have seen
a great light:
they that
dwell
in the land
of the shadow
of death,
upon them hath
the light shined.
Let favour
be shewed
to the wicked,
yet will
he not learn
righteousness:
in the land
of uprightness
will
he deal unjustly,
and will not behold
the majesty
of the LORD.
When the boughs
thereof are withered,
they shall be broken off:
the women come,
and set them
on fire:
for it
is
a people
of no understanding:
therefore he that
made them
will not have mercy
on them,
and he
that formed them
will shew them
no favour.
But
the word
of the LORD
was unto them precept
upon precept,
precept
upon precept;
line upon line,
line upon line;
here a little,
and
there a little;
that they
might go,
and fall backward,
and be broken,
and snared,
and taken.
For the LORD
hath poured out
upon you the spirit
of deep sleep,
and hath closed
your eyes:
the prophets
and your rulers,
the seers
hath he covered.
And the vision
of all is become
unto you
as the words
of a book
that is sealed,
which men
deliver to one
that is learned,
saying,
Read this,
I pray thee:
and he saith,
I cannot;
for it
is sealed:
Have
ye not known?
have
ye not heard?
hath
it not been told you
from the beginning?
have
ye not understood
from the foundations
of the earth?
To open the blind eyes,
to bring
out the prisoners
from the prison,
and them that sit
in darkness
out of the prison house.
Hear,
ye deaf;
and look,
ye blind,
that ye
may see.
Who is blind,
but my servant?
or deaf,
as my messenger
that I sent?
who is
blind as he
that is perfect,
and blind
as the LORD's servant?
Seeing many things,
but
thou observest not;
opening the ears,
but
he heareth not.
They have not known
nor understood:
for he
hath shut
their eyes,
that they
cannot see;
and their hearts,
that they
cannot understand.
He feedeth on ashes:
a deceived heart
hath turned him aside,
that he
cannot deliver
his soul,
nor say,
Is there not
a lie
in my right hand?
Yea,
thou heardest not;
yea,
thou knewest not;
yea,
from that time
that thine ear
was not opened:
for I
knew that thou
wouldest deal
very treacherously,
and wast called
a transgressor
from the womb.
His watchmen
are blind:
they are all ignorant,
they are all
dumb dogs,
they cannot bark;
sleeping,
lying down,
loving
to slumber.
For,
behold,
the darkness
shall cover
the earth,
and gross darkness
the people:
but the LORD
shall arise
upon thee,
and his glory
shall be seen
upon thee.
The priests
said not,
Where is the LORD?
and
they
that handle the law
knew me not:
the pastors
also transgressed against me,
and the prophets
prophesied
by Baal,
and walked
after things
that do not profit.
For my people
is foolish,
they have not known me;
they are sottish children,
and
they have
none understanding:
they are wise
to do evil,
but to do good
they have
no knowledge.
Therefore I said,
Surely these
are poor;
they are foolish:
for they
know not the way
of the LORD,
nor the judgment
of their God.
Yea,
the stork
in the heaven
knoweth
her appointed times;
and the turtle
and the crane
and the swallow
observe
the time
of their coming;
but my people
know not the judgment
of the LORD.
And they
bend
their tongues like
their bow
for lies:
but
they are not valiant
for the truth
upon the earth;
for they proceed
from evil to evil,
and
they know not me,
saith the LORD.
Thine habitation
is in the midst
of deceit;
through deceit
they refuse
to know me,
saith the LORD.
And it
shall come
to pass,
when
thou shalt shew
this people all these words,
and
they shall say
unto thee,
Wherefore
hath
the LORD
pronounced all
this great evil
against us?
or what
is our iniquity?
or what
is our sin
that we
have committed
against the LORD
our God?
The heart
is deceitful above all things,
and desperately wicked:
who can know it?
Son of man,
thou dwellest in the midst
of a rebellious house,
which have
eyes to see,
and see not;
they have ears
to hear,
and hear not:
for they
are a rebellious house.
Many shall be purified,
and made white,
and tried;
but the wicked
shall do wickedly:
and none of the wicked
shall understand;
but the wise
shall understand.
Hear the word
of the LORD,
ye children
of Israel:
for the LORD
hath a controversy
with the inhabitants
of the land,
because
there is no truth,
nor mercy,
nor knowledge
of God
in the land.
My people
are destroyed
for lack
of knowledge:
because
thou hast rejected
knowledge,
I will also reject thee,
that thou
shalt be
no priest to me:
seeing
thou hast forgotten
the law
of thy God,
I will also forget
thy children.
I will not punish
your daughters
when
they commit
whoredom,
nor your spouses
when
they commit
adultery:
for themselves
are separated
with whores,
and
they sacrifice
with harlots:
therefore the people
that doth not understand
shall fall.
They will not frame
their doings
to turn
unto their God:
for the spirit
of whoredoms
is in the midst
of them,
and
they have not known
the LORD.
Ephraim also is like
a silly dove
without heart:
they call
to Egypt,
they go
to Assyria.
All the sinners
of my people
shall die
by the sword,
which say,
The evil
shall not overtake nor
prevent us.
But
they know not
the thoughts
of the LORD,
neither understand
they his counsel:
for he
shall gather them
as the sheaves
into the floor.
Neither do men
light a candle,
and put it
under a bushel,
but on a candlestick;
and it
giveth
light
unto all
that are in the house.
Let your light so
shine before men,
that they
may see
your good works,
and glorify
your Father
which is in heaven.
But if thine
eye
be evil,
thy whole body
shall be
full of darkness.
If therefore
the light
that is in thee
be darkness,
how great
is that darkness!
Therefore speak
I to them
in parables:
because
they seeing
see not;
and hearing
they hear not,
neither do
they understand.
And
in them is fulfilled
the prophecy
of Esaias,
which saith,
By hearing
ye shall hear,
and shall not understand;
and seeing
ye shall see,
and shall not perceive:
For this
people's heart
is waxed gross,
and their ears
are dull
of hearing,
and their eyes
they have closed;
lest at any time
they should see
with their eyes
and hear
with their ears,
and should understand
with their heart,
and should be converted,
and
I should heal them.
But blessed
are your eyes,
for they see:
and your ears,
for they hear.
When any one heareth
the word
of the kingdom,
and understandeth it not,
then cometh the wicked one,
and catcheth away
that which
was sown
in his heart.
This is
he which received
seed
by the way side.
Let them alone:
they be blind leaders
of the blind.
And
if the blind
lead the blind,
both shall fall
into the ditch.
And
in the morning,
It will be
foul
weather to day:
for the sky
is red
and lowering.
O ye hypocrites,
ye can discern the face
of the sky;
but can
ye not discern
the signs
of the times?
Jesus
answered
and
said unto them,
Ye do err,
not knowing
the scriptures,
nor the power
of God.
Ye fools
and blind:
for whether
is greater,
the gift,
or the altar
that sanctifieth the gift?
Ye blind guides,
which strain
at a gnat,
and swallow
a camel.
Thou blind
Pharisee,
cleanse first
that which
is within the cup
and platter,
that the outside
of them may be clean also.
And
he said unto them,
Unto you
it is given
to know the mystery
of the kingdom
of God:
but unto them that
are without,
all these things
are done
in parables:
That seeing
they may see,
and not perceive;
and hearing
they may hear,
and not understand;
lest at any time
they should be converted,
and their sins
should be forgiven them.
And these
are
they
by the way side,
where the word
is sown;
but
when
they have heard,
Satan cometh immediately,
and taketh away
the word
that was sown
in their hearts.
For they considered not
the miracle
of the loaves:
for their heart
was hardened.
And
he saith unto them,
Are
ye so
without understanding also?
Do ye
not perceive,
that whatsoever thing from
without entereth into the man,
it cannot defile him;
The Spirit
of the Lord
is upon me,
because
he hath anointed me
to preach the gospel
to the poor;
he hath sent me
to heal
the brokenhearted,
to preach deliverance
to the captives,
and recovering
of sight
to the blind,
to set at liberty
them
that are bruised,
Those by the way side
are they that
hear;
then cometh the devil,
and taketh away
the word
out of their hearts,
lest
they should believe
and be saved.
Woe unto you,
lawyers!
for ye
have taken away the key
of knowledge:
ye entered not
in yourselves,
and them
that were entering
in ye hindered.
But he
that knew not,
and did commit things worthy
of stripes,
shall be beaten
with few stripes.
For unto whomsoever much
is given,
of him shall be
much required:
and to whom men
have committed much,
of him they
will ask
the more.
Saying,
If thou
hadst known,
even thou,
at least
in this thy day,
the things which
belong unto thy peace!
but now
they are
hid
from thine eyes.
Then said
Jesus, Father,
forgive them;
for they
know not
what they do.
And
they parted
his raiment,
and cast lots.
And the light
shineth in darkness;
and the darkness
comprehended it not.
Nicodemus
saith unto him,
How can a man
be born
when he
is old?
can
he enter
the second time
into his mother's womb,
and be born?
Marvel
not
that I
said
unto thee,
Ye must be born again.
For every one
that
doeth
evil hateth the light,
neither cometh to the light,
lest
his deeds
should be reproved.
He that
cometh from above
is above all:
he that is
of the earth
is earthly,
and speaketh of the earth:
he that
cometh from heaven
is above all.
Jesus
answered
and said
unto her,
If thou
knewest
the gift of God,
and
who it
is that
saith to thee,
Give me to drink;
thou
wouldest have asked of him,
and he
would have given
thee living water.
The Jews
therefore strove
among themselves,
saying,
How can this man
give us his flesh
to eat?
Many therefore of his disciples,
when
they had heard this,
said,
This is an hard saying;
who can hear it?
Then cried Jesus
in the temple
as he taught,
saying,
Ye both
know me,
and
ye know whence
I am:
and
I am not come
of myself,
but he
that sent me
is true,
whom
ye know not.
Then spake Jesus
again unto them,
saying,
I am the light
of the world:
he that
followeth me
shall not walk
in darkness,
but shall have
the light
of life.
Why do
ye not understand
my speech?
even
because
ye cannot hear
my word.
The man
answered
and
said unto them,
Why herein is
a marvellous thing,
that ye
know not
from whence
he is,
and yet
he hath opened mine eyes.
And Jesus said,
For judgment
I am come
into this world,
that they
which see
not might see;
and
that they
which see
might be made blind.
That the saying
of Esaias
the prophet
might be fulfilled,
which he spake,
Lord,
who hath believed
our report?
and to whom
hath
the arm
of the Lord
been revealed?
Even the Spirit
of truth;
whom
the world
cannot receive,
because
it seeth him not,
neither knoweth him:
but ye
know him;
for he
dwelleth with you,
and shall be
in you.
But all these things
will
they do unto you
for my name's sake,
because
they
know not him that
sent me.
They shall put you
out of the synagogues:
yea,
the time cometh,
that whosoever
killeth you
will think
that he
doeth God service.
O righteous Father,
the world
hath not known thee:
but
I have known thee,
and these
have known that
thou hast sent me.
And now,
brethren,
I wot
that through ignorance
ye did it,
as did also your rulers.
For they
that dwell
at Jerusalem,
and their rulers,
because
they knew him not,
nor yet
the voices
of the prophets which
are read every sabbath day,
they have fulfilled them
in condemning him.
For as I
passed by,
and beheld
your devotions,
I found an altar
with this inscription,
TO THE UNKNOWN GOD.
Whom therefore
ye ignorantly worship,
him declare
I unto you.
He said unto them,
Have
ye received
the Holy Ghost
since ye believed?
And
they
said unto him,
We have not
so much as heard
whether there be any Holy Ghost.
To open their eyes,
and
to turn them
from darkness
to light,
and
from the power
of Satan
unto God,
that they
may receive forgiveness
of sins,
and inheritance
among them which
are sanctified
by faith
that is in me.
Because
that
which may be known
of God
is manifest in them;
for God
hath shewed it
unto them.
For the invisible things
of him
from the creation
of the world
are clearly seen,
being understood
by the things
that are made,
even his eternal power
and Godhead;
so that
they are without excuse:
Because that,
when
they knew God,
they glorified him not
as God,
neither were thankful;
but became vain
in their imaginations,
and their foolish heart
was darkened.
Professing themselves
to be wise,
they became fools,
And
even as
they did not like
to retain God
in their knowledge,
God gave
them over
to a reprobate mind,
to do
those things which
are not convenient;
For I
would not,
brethren,
that ye
should be ignorant
of this mystery,
lest
ye should be wise
in your own conceits;
that blindness
in part is happened
to Israel,
until the fulness
of the Gentiles
be come in.
For the preaching
of the cross
is
to them
that perish foolishness;
but unto us which
are saved
it is the power
of God.
Where is the wise?
where is the scribe?
where is the disputer
of this world?
hath not God
made foolish
the wisdom
of this world?
For after that
in the wisdom
of God the world
by wisdom
knew not God,
it pleased God
by the foolishness
of preaching
to save them
that believe.
Which none of the princes
of this world knew:
for had
they known it,
they would not have crucified
the Lord
of glory.
But the natural man
receiveth not
the things
of the Spirit
of God:
for they
are foolishness
unto him:
neither can
he know them,
because
they are spiritually discerned.
Awake
to righteousness,
and sin not;
for some
have not the knowledge
of God:
I speak this
to your shame.
But their minds
were blinded:
for until this day
remaineth
the same vail
untaken away
in the reading
of the old testament;
which vail
is done away
in Christ.
But even unto this day,
when Moses
is read,
the vail
is upon their heart.
But
if our gospel
be hid,
it is
hid to them
that are lost:
In whom
the god
of this world
hath blinded
the minds
of them
which believe not,
lest the light
of the glorious gospel
of Christ,
who is the image
of God,
should shine unto them.
For God,
who commanded the light
to shine out of darkness,
hath shined
in our hearts,
to give the light
of the knowledge
of the glory
of God
in the face
of Jesus Christ.
Howbeit then,
when
ye knew not God,
ye did service
unto them
which by nature
are no gods.
Having
the understanding darkened,
being alienated
from the life
of God
through the ignorance
that is in them,
because
of the blindness
of their heart:
For ye
were sometimes
darkness,
but now are
ye light
in the Lord:
walk as children
of light:
Who hath delivered us
from the power
of darkness,
and hath translated us
into the kingdom
of his dear Son:
That every one
of you
should know how
to possess his vessel
in sanctification
and honour;
Not in the lust
of concupiscence,
even as the Gentiles which
know not God:
That no man
go beyond
and defraud
his brother
in any matter:
because
that the Lord
is the avenger
of all such,
as we
also have forewarned you
and testified.
For God
hath not called us
unto uncleanness,
but unto holiness.
In flaming fire
taking vengeance
on them that
know not God,
and
that obey not
the gospel
of our Lord Jesus Christ:
And
for this cause
God shall send them
strong delusion,
that they
should believe a lie:
Ever learning,
and never able
to come
to the knowledge
of the truth.
They profess that
they know God;
but in works
they deny him,
being abominable,
and disobedient,
and unto every good work reprobate.
Of whom
we have many things
to say,
and hard
to be uttered,
seeing
ye are dull
of hearing.
As obedient children,
not fashioning yourselves according to
the former
lusts
in your ignorance:
But
ye are a chosen generation,
a royal priesthood,
an holy nation,
a peculiar people;
that ye
should shew
forth the praises
of him
who hath called
you out of darkness
into his marvellous light;
But he
that
lacketh
these things
is blind,
and
cannot see afar off,
and hath forgotten
that he
was purged
from his old sins.
As also in all his epistles,
speaking in them
of these things;
in which
are some things hard
to be understood,
which they
that are unlearned
and unstable wrest,
as they
do also
the other scriptures,
unto their own destruction.
If we
say that
we have fellowship
with him,
and walk
in darkness,
we lie,
and do not
the truth:
He that saith,
I know him,
and keepeth not
his commandments,
is a liar,
and the truth
is not in him.
He that
saith
he is in the light,
and hateth his brother,
is in darkness
even until now.
But
he that
hateth his brother
is in darkness,
and walketh in darkness,
and knoweth not whither
he goeth,
because
that darkness
hath blinded
his eyes.
Behold,
what manner
of love
the Father
hath bestowed upon us,
that we
should be called
the sons
of God:
therefore the world
knoweth us not,
because
it knew him not.
Whosoever abideth
in him sinneth not:
whosoever
sinneth
hath not seen him,
neither known him.
He that
loveth not knoweth not God;
for God is love.
Beloved,
follow not
that which
is evil,
but that which
is good.
He that
doeth good
is of God:
but he
that
doeth
evil hath not seen God.
But these
speak evil
of those things
which they
know not:
but
what
they know naturally,
as brute beasts,
in those things
they corrupt themselves.
Because
thou sayest,
I am rich,
and increased
with goods,
and have
need of nothing;
and knowest not that
thou art wretched,
and miserable,
and poor,
and blind,
and naked:
