And Jethro said,
Blessed
be the LORD,
who hath delivered you
out of the hand
of the Egyptians,
and
out of the hand
of Pharaoh,
who hath delivered
the people
from under the hand
of the Egyptians.
Now I
know
that the LORD
is greater than all gods:
for in the thing
wherein they
dealt proudly
he was above them.
And I
will break
the pride
of your power;
and I
will make
your heaven
as iron,
and your earth
as brass:
Beware
that thou
forget not the LORD
thy God,
in not keeping
his commandments,
and his judgments,
and his statutes,
which I
command thee
this day:
Lest
when
thou hast eaten
and art full,
and hast built
goodly houses,
and dwelt
therein;
And
when thy
herds
and thy flocks multiply,
and thy silver
and thy gold
is multiplied,
and all
that thou
hast is multiplied;
Then thine heart
be lifted up,
and
thou forget
the LORD thy God,
which brought thee forth
out of the land
of Egypt,
from the house
of bondage;
And
thou say
in thine heart,
My power
and the might
of mine hand
hath gotten me
this wealth.
But
thou shalt remember
the LORD thy God:
for it
is
he that
giveth thee power
to get wealth,
that he
may establish
his covenant which
he sware unto thy fathers,
as it is this day.
And it
shall be,
if thou
do at all forget
the LORD thy God,
and walk
after other gods,
and serve them,
and worship them,
I testify
against you
this day
that ye
shall surely perish.
As the nations
which the LORD
destroyeth before your face,
so shall
ye perish;
because
ye would not be obedient
unto the voice
of the LORD your God.
Then said all
the trees
unto the bramble,
Come thou,
and
reign over us.
And the bramble
said
unto the trees,
If in truth
ye anoint me king
over you,
then come
and put
your trust
in my shadow:
and if not,
let fire
come
out of the bramble,
and devour
the cedars
of Lebanon.
Talk
no more so
exceeding proudly;
let not
arrogancy
come
out of your mouth:
for the LORD
is a God
of knowledge,
and by him actions
are weighed.
The bows
of the mighty men
are broken,
and they
that stumbled
are girded
with strength.
They that
were full
have hired
out themselves
for bread;
and they
that were hungry ceased:
so that
the barren
hath born seven;
and she that
hath
many children
is waxed feeble.
And
when Ahithophel
saw
that his counsel
was not followed,
he saddled
his ass,
and arose,
and gat him
home
to his house,
to his city,
and put
his household
in order,
and hanged himself,
and died,
and was buried
in the sepulchre
of his father.
And the king
of Israel answered
and said,
Tell him,
Let not
him that
girdeth on his harness
boast himself as he
that putteth it off.
But Naaman
was wroth,
and went away,
and said,
Behold,
I thought,
He will surely come out
to me,
and stand,
and call on
the name
of the LORD his God,
and strike
his hand over the place,
and recover
the leper.
Are not Abana
and Pharpar,
rivers
of Damascus,
better
than all
the waters
of Israel?
may
I not wash in them,
and be clean?
So he
turned
and went away
in a rage.
And his servants
came near,
and
spake unto him,
and said,
My father,
if the prophet
had bid
thee do
some great thing,
wouldest thou
not have done it?
how much
rather then,
when
he saith to thee,
Wash,
and be clean?
And Jehoash
the king
of Israel
sent
to Amaziah king
of Judah,
saying,
The thistle that
was in Lebanon
sent to the cedar
that was in Lebanon,
saying,
Give thy daughter
to my son
to wife:
and there passed
by a wild beast
that was in Lebanon,
and trode
down the thistle.
Thou hast indeed smitten Edom,
and thine heart
hath lifted thee up:
glory of this,
and tarry at home:
for why
shouldest
thou meddle
to thy hurt,
that thou
shouldest fall,
even thou,
and Judah
with thee?
And Hezekiah
hearkened unto them,
and shewed them all
the house
of his precious things,
the silver,
and the gold,
and the spices,
and the precious ointment,
and all
the house
of his armour,
and all
that was found
in his treasures:
there was nothing
in his house,
nor
in all his dominion,
that Hezekiah
shewed them not.
But
when
he was strong,
his heart
was lifted up to
his destruction:
for he transgressed
against the LORD
his God,
and went into the temple
of the LORD
to burn incense
upon the altar
of incense.
And Azariah
the priest
went in
after him,
and with him fourscore priests
of the LORD,
that were valiant men:
And
they withstood Uzziah
the king,
and
said unto him,
It appertaineth not
unto thee,
Uzziah,
to burn
incense
unto the LORD,
but to the priests
the sons
of Aaron,
that are consecrated
to burn incense:
go out of the sanctuary;
for thou
hast trespassed;
neither shall
it be for thine
honour
from the LORD God.
Then Uzziah
was wroth,
and had
a censer
in his hand
to burn incense:
and
while he
was wroth
with the priests,
the leprosy
even rose up
in his forehead
before the priests
in the house
of the LORD,
from beside the incense altar.
Howbeit
in the business
of the ambassadors
of the princes
of Babylon,
who sent
unto him
to enquire
of the wonder
that was done
in the land,
God left him,
to try him,
that he
might know all
that
was in his heart.
And when Haman
saw that Mordecai
bowed not,
nor did him
reverence,
then was Haman full of wrath.
And Haman
told them
of the glory
of his riches,
and the multitude
of his children,
and all
the things
wherein the king
had promoted him,
and
how he
had advanced him above
the princes
and servants
of the king.
Yet all
this availeth me
nothing,
so long
as I see
Mordecai the Jew
sitting
at the king's gate.
So Haman
came in.
And the king
said unto him,
What
shall be done
unto the man
whom the king
delighteth to honour?
Now Haman
thought
in his heart,
To whom
would
the king
delight
to do honour
more than
to myself?
So they
hanged Haman
on the gallows
that he
had prepared
for Mordecai.
Then was
the king's wrath pacified.
For vain men
would be wise,
though man
be born like
a wild ass's colt.
No doubt
but
ye are the people,
and wisdom
shall die
with you.
But I
have
understanding as well as you;
I am not inferior
to you:
yea,
who knoweth not such things
as these?
What ye know,
the same
do
I know also:
I am not inferior
unto you.
O that
ye would altogether hold
your peace!
and it
should be
your wisdom.
Then answered Eliphaz
the Temanite,
and said,
Should a wise man
utter vain knowledge,
and fill
his belly
with the east wind?
Should
he reason
with unprofitable talk?
or with speeches
wherewith
he can do
no good?
Yea,
thou castest off fear,
and restrainest prayer
before God.
For thy
mouth
uttereth thine iniquity,
and thou
choosest
the tongue
of the crafty.
Thine own
mouth
condemneth thee,
and not I:
yea,
thine own lips
testify
against thee.
Art
thou
the first man
that was born?
or wast
thou made
before the hills?
Hast
thou heard
the secret
of God?
and dost
thou restrain wisdom
to thyself?
What knowest thou,
that we
know not?
what understandest thou,
which is not in us?
With us are both
the grayheaded
and very aged men,
much elder than
thy father.
Are the consolations
of God small
with thee?
is there
any secret thing
with thee?
Why doth
thine heart
carry thee away?
and what
do
thy eyes
wink at,
That thou
turnest
thy spirit
against God,
and lettest
such words
go out of thy mouth?
Wherefore are
we counted
as beasts,
and reputed vile
in your sight?
Who shall declare his way
to his face?
and
who shall repay him
what he hath done?
Yet shall
he be brought
to the grave,
and shall remain
in the tomb.
Great men
are not always wise:
neither do
the aged
understand judgment.
Therefore I said,
Hearken to me;
I also will shew
mine opinion.
Behold,
I waited
for your words;
I gave ear
to your reasons,
whilst ye
searched
out what
to say.
Yea,
I attended
unto you,
and,
behold,
there was none of
you that
convinced Job,
or that
answered his words:
Lest
ye should say,
We have found out wisdom:
God
thrusteth him down,
not man.
Men do therefore fear him:
he respecteth not
any that
are wise
of heart.
Put them in fear,
O LORD:
that the nations
may know themselves to be
but men.
Selah.
The wicked
in his pride
doth persecute
the poor:
let them
be taken
in the devices
that
they have imagined.
For the wicked
boasteth of his heart's desire,
and blesseth the covetous,
whom
the LORD abhorreth.
The wicked,
through the pride
of his countenance,
will not seek
after God:
God is not
in all his thoughts.
His ways
are always grievous;
thy judgments
are far above
out of his sight:
as for all his enemies,
he puffeth at them.
He hath said
in his heart,
I shall not be moved:
for I
shall never be
in adversity.
He hath said
in his heart,
God hath forgotten:
he hideth his face;
he will never see it.
The LORD
shall cut off
all flattering lips,
and the tongue
that speaketh proud things:
Who have said,
With our tongue
will
we prevail;
our lips
are our own:
who is
lord over us?
For thou
wilt save
the afflicted people;
but wilt bring down
high looks.
O love the LORD,
all
ye his saints:
for the LORD
preserveth the faithful,
and plentifully rewardeth
the proud doer.
Their inward thought is,
that their houses
shall continue
for ever,
and their dwelling places
to all generations;
they call
their lands
after their own names.
Lo,
this is
the man
that made not God
his strength;
but trusted
in the abundance
of his riches,
and strengthened himself
in his wickedness.
Therefore pride
compasseth
them about
as a chain;
violence
covereth them
as a garment.
They are corrupt,
and speak wickedly concerning
oppression:
they speak loftily.
They set their mouth
against the heavens,
and their tongue
walketh through the earth.
I said
unto the fools,
Deal
not foolishly:
and
to the wicked,
Lift
not up the horn:
Lift not
up your horn
on high:
speak not
with a stiff neck.
For promotion
cometh neither
from the east,
nor
from the west,
nor
from the south.
Whoso
privily slandereth
his neighbour,
him will
I cut off:
him that
hath
an high look
and a proud heart
will not I suffer.
Thou hast rebuked
the proud
that are cursed,
which do err
from thy commandments.
The proud
have forged a lie
against me:
but I
will keep
thy precepts
with my whole heart.
Their heart
is as fat
as grease;
but I
delight
in thy law.
Let the proud
be ashamed;
for they
dealt perversely
with me
without a cause:
but
I will meditate
in thy precepts.
Though the LORD
be high,
yet hath
he respect
unto the lowly:
but the proud
he knoweth afar off.
Surely
he scorneth the scorners:
but
he giveth
grace unto the lowly.
These six things
doth
the LORD hate:
yea,
seven are an abomination
unto him:
A proud look,
a lying tongue,
and hands
that shed innocent blood,
The fear
of the LORD
is to hate evil:
pride,
and arrogancy,
and the evil way,
and the froward mouth,
do I hate.
He is in the way of life
that keepeth instruction:
but he
that
refuseth
reproof erreth.
When pride cometh,
then cometh shame:
but with the lowly is wisdom.
He that is
void of wisdom
despiseth his neighbour:
but a man
of understanding
holdeth his peace.
He that is despised,
and hath
a servant,
is better than
he that
honoureth himself,
and lacketh bread.
The way
of a fool
is right
in his own eyes:
but he
that hearkeneth
unto counsel
is wise.
Only by pride
cometh contention:
but with the well advised
is wisdom.
He that
despiseth
his neighbour sinneth:
but he that
hath mercy
on the poor,
happy is he.
A fool
despiseth his father's instruction:
but he
that
regardeth
reproof is prudent.
Correction is grievous
unto him that
forsaketh the way:
and he
that
hateth
reproof shall die.
A scorner
loveth not
one that
reproveth him:
neither will
he go
unto the wise.
The LORD
will destroy
the house
of the proud:
but
he will establish
the border
of the widow.
He that
refuseth
instruction despiseth his own soul:
but
he that heareth reproof
getteth
understanding.
Every one
that is proud
in heart
is an abomination
to the LORD:
though hand
join in hand,
he shall not be unpunished.
Pride goeth before destruction,
and an haughty spirit
before a fall.
Better
it is to be
of an humble spirit
with the lowly,
than
to divide the spoil
with the proud.
He loveth transgression
that loveth strife:
and
he that
exalteth
his gate
seeketh destruction.
The rich man's wealth
is his strong city,
and as an high wall
in his own conceit.
Before destruction the heart
of man
is haughty,
and before honour
is humility.
Most men
will proclaim every one
his own goodness:
but a faithful man
who can find?
An high look,
and a proud heart,
and the plowing
of the wicked,
is sin.
Proud
and haughty scorner
is his name,
who dealeth in proud wrath.
Whoso boasteth himself
of a false gift
is like
clouds
and wind
without rain.
It is not good
to eat much honey:
so for men to search
their own glory
is not glory.
Answer a fool
according to his folly,
lest
he be wise
in his own conceit.
Seest
thou a man wise
in his own conceit?
there is
more
hope
of a fool than of him.
The sluggard
is wiser
in his own conceit
than seven men that
can render
a reason.
Let another man
praise thee,
and not
thine own mouth;
a stranger,
and
not thine own lips.
The rich man
is wise
in his own conceit;
but the poor that
hath
understanding searcheth him out.
Scornful men
bring a city
into a snare:
but wise men
turn away wrath.
A man's pride
shall bring him low:
but honour
shall uphold
the humble
in spirit.
There is
a generation
that are pure
in their own eyes,
and yet is not washed
from their filthiness.
There is
a generation,
O how lofty
are their eyes!
and their eyelids
are lifted up.
The lofty looks
of man
shall be humbled,
and the haughtiness
of men
shall be bowed down,
and the LORD alone
shall be exalted
in that day.
For the day
of the LORD
of hosts
shall be
upon every one
that is
proud
and lofty,
and
upon every one
that is lifted up;
and
he shall be brought low:
And
upon all
the cedars
of Lebanon,
that are high
and lifted up,
and
upon all
the oaks
of Bashan,
And
upon all
the high mountains,
and upon all
the hills
that are lifted up,
And
upon every high tower,
and upon every fenced wall,
And
upon all
the ships
of Tarshish,
and
upon all pleasant pictures.
And the loftiness
of man
shall be bowed down,
and the haughtiness
of men
shall be made low:
and the LORD alone
shall be exalted
in that day.
Moreover the LORD saith,
Because
the daughters
of Zion
are haughty,
and walk
with stretched
forth necks
and wanton eyes,
walking
and mincing
as they go,
and making
a tinkling
with their feet:
Therefore the LORD
will smite
with a scab the crown
of the head
of the daughters
of Zion,
and the LORD
will discover
their secret parts.
In that day
the Lord
will take away
the bravery
of their tinkling ornaments
about their feet,
and their cauls,
and their round tires like
the moon,
The chains,
and the bracelets,
and the mufflers,
The bonnets,
and the ornaments
of the legs,
and the headbands,
and the tablets,
and the earrings,
The rings,
and nose jewels,
The changeable suits
of apparel,
and the mantles,
and the wimples,
and the crisping pins,
The glasses,
and the fine linen,
and the hoods,
and the vails.
And it
shall come
to pass,
that instead of sweet smell
there shall be stink;
and
instead of a girdle
a rent;
and instead of well
set hair baldness;
and
instead of a stomacher
a girding
of sackcloth;
and burning instead
of beauty.
Thy men
shall fall
by the sword,
and thy mighty
in the war.
And her gates
shall lament
and mourn;
and
she being
desolate
shall sit
upon the ground.
Woe unto them that
join house to house,
that lay
field to field,
till there be
no place,
that they
may be placed alone
in the midst
of the earth!
And the mean man
shall be brought down,
and the mighty man
shall be humbled,
and the eyes
of the lofty
shall be humbled:
And all
the people
shall know,
even Ephraim
and the inhabitant
of Samaria,
that say
in the pride
and stoutness
of heart,
The bricks
are fallen down,
but
we will build
with hewn stones:
the sycomores
are cut down,
but
we will change them
into cedars.
O Assyrian,
the rod
of mine anger,
and
the staff
in their hand
is mine indignation.
I will send him
against an hypocritical nation,
and
against the people
of my wrath
will
I give him
a charge,
to take the spoil,
and to take
the prey,
and
to tread them
down like
the mire
of the streets.
Howbeit
he meaneth not so,
neither doth
his heart
think so;
but it
is in his heart to
destroy and cut off nations
not a few.
For he saith,
Are not my princes
altogether kings?
Is not Calno
as Carchemish?
is not Hamath
as Arpad?
is not Samaria
as Damascus?
As my hand
hath found the kingdoms
of the idols,
and whose graven
images
did excel them
of Jerusalem
and of Samaria;
Shall I not,
as I
have done
unto Samaria
and her idols,
so do
to Jerusalem
and her idols?
Wherefore
it shall come
to pass,
that when the Lord
hath performed
his whole work
upon mount Zion
and
on Jerusalem,
I will punish the fruit
of the stout heart
of the king
of Assyria,
and the glory
of his high looks.
For he saith,
By the strength
of my hand
I have done it,
and by my wisdom;
for I
am prudent:
and
I have removed
the bounds
of the people,
and have robbed
their treasures,
and
I have put down
the inhabitants like
a valiant man:
And my hand
hath found
as a nest
the riches
of the people:
and as one
gathereth
eggs
that are left,
have
I gathered all
the earth;
and there was none
that moved
the wing,
or opened
the mouth,
or peeped.
Shall
the axe
boast itself
against him that
heweth therewith?
or shall
the saw
magnify itself
against him that
shaketh it?
as if the rod
should shake itself
against them that lift it up,
or as if the staff
should lift
up itself,
as if it
were no wood.
Therefore shall
the Lord,
the Lord
of hosts,
send among his fat ones leanness;
and
under his glory
he shall kindle
a burning like
the burning
of a fire.
And I
will punish
the world
for their evil,
and the wicked
for their iniquity;
and I
will cause
the arrogancy
of the proud
to cease,
and will lay low
the haughtiness
of the terrible.
How art
thou fallen
from heaven,
O Lucifer,
son
of the morning!
how art
thou cut down
to the ground,
which didst weaken
the nations!
For thou
hast said
in thine heart,
I will ascend
into heaven,
I will exalt
my throne above the stars
of God:
I will sit also
upon the mount
of the congregation,
in the sides
of the north:
I will ascend
above the heights
of the clouds;
I will be like
the most High.
Yet
thou shalt be brought down
to hell,
to the sides
of the pit.
They that
see thee
shall narrowly look
upon thee,
and consider thee,
saying,
Is this
the man
that made
the earth
to tremble,
that did shake
kingdoms;
What hast
thou here?
and whom hast
thou here,
that thou
hast hewed thee
out a sepulchre here,
as he
that heweth him
out a sepulchre
on high,
and that graveth
an habitation
for himself
in a rock?
And I
will drive
thee from thy station,
and from thy
state
shall
he pull thee down.
Is this
your joyous city,
whose antiquity
is of ancient days?
her own feet
shall carry
her afar off
to sojourn.
The LORD of hosts
hath purposed it,
to stain the pride
of all glory,
and
to bring
into contempt
all the honourable
of the earth.
The earth
mourneth and fadeth away,
the world
languisheth and fadeth away,
the haughty people
of the earth
do languish.
And it
shall come
to pass
in that day,
that the LORD
shall punish
the host
of the high ones
that are on high,
and the kings
of the earth
upon the earth.
For he
bringeth down them that
dwell
on high;
the lofty city,
he layeth it low;
he layeth it low,
even to the ground;
he bringeth it even
to the dust.
The crown
of pride,
the drunkards
of Ephraim,
shall be trodden
under feet:
And Hezekiah
was glad
of them,
and shewed them
the house
of his precious things,
the silver,
and the gold,
and the spices,
and the precious ointment,
and all
the house
of his armour,
and all
that was found
in his treasures:
there was nothing
in his house,
nor
in all his dominion,
that Hezekiah
shewed them not.
And thou saidst,
I shall be a lady
for ever:
so that
thou didst not lay
these things
to thy heart,
neither didst remember
the latter end of it.
Therefore hear now this,
thou
that art
given
to pleasures,
that dwellest carelessly,
that sayest in thine heart,
I am,
and none else
beside me;
I shall not sit
as a widow,
neither shall
I know
the loss
of children:
But these two things
shall come
to thee
in a moment
in one day,
the loss
of children,
and widowhood:
they shall come upon thee
in their perfection
for the multitude
of thy sorceries,
and
for the great abundance
of thine enchantments.
For thou
hast trusted
in thy wickedness:
thou hast said,
None seeth me.
Thy wisdom
and thy knowledge,
it hath perverted thee;
and
thou hast said
in thine heart,
I am,
and none else
beside me.
Thus saith the LORD,
Let
not the wise man
glory
in his wisdom,
neither let
the mighty man
glory in his might,
let not
the rich man
glory
in his riches:
But let him
that glorieth
glory in this,
that he
understandeth and knoweth me,
that I
am the LORD
which exercise
lovingkindness,
judgment,
and righteousness,
in the earth:
for in these things
I delight,
saith the LORD.
Thus saith the LORD,
After this manner
will
I mar
the pride
of Judah,
and the great pride
of Jerusalem.
Hear ye,
and give ear;
be not proud:
for the LORD
hath spoken.
But
if ye
will not hear it,
my soul
shall weep
in secret places
for your pride;
and mine
eye
shall weep sore,
and run down
with tears,
because
the LORD's flock
is carried away captive.
For because thou
hast trusted
in thy
works
and
in thy treasures,
thou shalt also be taken:
and Chemosh
shall go forth
into captivity
with his priests
and his princes
together.
How say ye,
We are
mighty
and strong men
for the war?
Moab is spoiled,
and gone up
out of her cities,
and his chosen young men
are gone down
to the slaughter,
saith the King,
whose name
is the LORD
of hosts.
We have heard
the pride
of Moab,
(he is exceeding proud)
his loftiness,
and his arrogancy,
and his pride,
and the haughtiness
of his heart.
Wherefore gloriest
thou
in the valleys,
thy flowing valley,
O backsliding daughter?
that trusted
in her treasures,
saying,
Who
shall come unto me?
Thy terribleness
hath deceived thee,
and the pride
of thine heart,
O thou
that dwellest in the clefts
of the rock,
that holdest the height
of the hill:
though thou
shouldest make
thy nest as high
as the eagle,
I will bring thee down
from thence,
saith the LORD.
Behold,
I am against thee,
O thou most proud,
saith the Lord GOD
of hosts:
for thy day
is come,
the time
that I
will visit thee.
And the most proud
shall stumble
and fall,
and none
shall raise him up:
and I
will kindle
a fire
in his cities,
and it
shall devour all round
about him.
For thy sister
Sodom
was not mentioned
by thy
mouth
in the day
of thy pride,
Son of man,
say
unto the prince
of Tyrus,
Thus saith the Lord GOD;
Because thine heart
is lifted up,
and
thou hast said,
I am a God,
I sit
in the seat
of God,
in the midst
of the seas;
yet
thou art a man,
and not God,
though thou set
thine heart
as the heart
of God:
Behold,
thou art wiser
than Daniel;
there is
no secret
that they
can hide
from thee:
With thy wisdom
and
with thine
understanding
thou hast gotten thee riches,
and hast gotten
gold
and silver
into thy treasures:
By thy great wisdom
and
by thy traffick
hast
thou increased
thy riches,
and thine heart
is lifted up
because of thy riches:
Therefore thus
saith the Lord GOD;
Because
thou hast set
thine heart
as the heart
of God;
Behold,
therefore I
will bring strangers
upon thee,
the terrible
of the nations:
and
they shall draw
their swords
against the beauty
of thy wisdom,
and
they shall defile
thy brightness.
They shall bring thee down
to the pit,
and
thou shalt die
the deaths
of them that
are slain in the midst
of the seas.
Wilt thou
yet say
before him
that slayeth thee,
I am God?
but
thou shalt be a man,
and no God,
in the hand
of him that slayeth thee.
Thine heart
was lifted up
because of thy beauty,
thou hast corrupted
thy wisdom
by reason
of thy brightness:
I will cast thee
to the ground,
I will lay thee
before kings,
that they
may behold thee.
Thus saith the LORD;
They also
that
uphold Egypt
shall fall;
and
the pride
of her power
shall come down:
from the tower
of Syene
shall
they fall in it
by the sword,
saith the Lord GOD.
Therefore thus
saith the Lord GOD;
Because
thou hast lifted
up thyself
in height,
and
he hath shot
up his top
among the thick boughs,
and his heart
is lifted up
in his height;
I have therefore delivered him
into the hand
of the mighty one
of the heathen;
he shall surely deal with him:
I have driven
him out
for his wickedness.
The king spake,
and said,
Is not
this great Babylon,
that I
have built
for the house
of the kingdom
by the might
of my power,
and
for the honour
of my majesty?
While the word
was in the king's mouth,
there fell
a voice
from heaven,
saying,
O king Nebuchadnezzar,
to thee
it is spoken;
The kingdom
is departed
from thee.
And
they shall drive thee
from men,
and thy
dwelling
shall be
with the beasts
of the field:
they shall make
thee
to eat grass
as oxen,
and seven times
shall pass
over thee,
until thou
know
that the most High
ruleth in the kingdom
of men,
and giveth
it to whomsoever
he will.
The same hour
was
the thing
fulfilled
upon Nebuchadnezzar:
and
he was driven
from men,
and did eat grass
as oxen,
and his body
was wet with the dew
of heaven,
till his hairs
were grown like eagles' feathers,
and his nails like birds' claws.
And
at the end
of the days I Nebuchadnezzar
lifted
up mine
eyes unto heaven,
and mine
understanding returned unto me,
and
I blessed
the most High,
and
I praised
and honoured him
that
liveth for ever,
whose dominion
is an everlasting dominion,
and his kingdom
is from generation to generation:
Now I Nebuchadnezzar
praise
and extol
and honour
the King
of heaven,
all whose works
are truth,
and his ways judgment:
and
those that walk
in pride
he is able
to abase.
But
when his heart
was lifted up,
and his mind
hardened
in pride,
he was deposed
from his kingly throne,
and they
took
his glory
from him:
And
he shall plant
the tabernacles
of his palace
between the seas
in the glorious holy mountain;
yet he
shall come
to his end,
and none
shall help him.
And
the pride
of Israel
doth testify
to his face:
therefore shall Israel
and Ephraim fall
in their iniquity:
Judah
also shall fall with them.
And Ephraim
is as an heifer
that is taught,
and loveth
to tread
out the corn;
but I
passed over
upon her fair neck:
I will make Ephraim
to ride;
Judah shall plow,
and Jacob
shall break
his clods.
The pride
of thine heart
hath deceived thee,
thou
that dwellest in the clefts
of the rock,
whose habitation
is high;
that saith in his heart,
Who shall bring
me down
to the ground?
Though thou
exalt thyself
as the eagle,
and
though thou set
thy nest
among the stars,
thence will
I bring thee down,
saith the LORD.
There is
no healing
of thy bruise;
thy wound
is grievous:
all that
hear the bruit
of thee
shall clap
the hands over thee:
for upon whom hath not
thy wickedness
passed continually?
Behold,
his soul which
is lifted
up is not upright
in him:
but the just shall live
by his faith.
Yea also,
because
he transgresseth by wine,
he is a proud man,
neither keepeth at home,
who enlargeth his desire
as hell,
and is as death,
and cannot be satisfied,
but gathereth
unto him all nations,
and heapeth unto him all people:
Woe to him
that coveteth
an evil covetousness
to his house,
that he
may set
his nest
on high,
that he
may be delivered from the power
of evil!
This shall
they have
for their pride,
because
they have reproached
and magnified themselves
against the people
of the LORD
of hosts.
This is the rejoicing city
that dwelt carelessly,
that said
in her heart,
I am,
and there is none
beside me:
how is
she become
a desolation,
a place
for beasts
to lie down in!
every one that passeth
by her
shall hiss,
and wag
his hand.
In that day
shalt thou
not be ashamed
for all thy doings,
wherein thou
hast transgressed against me:
for then I
will take away
out of the midst
of thee
them that
rejoice
in thy pride,
and
thou shalt
no more
be haughty
because of my holy mountain.
For,
behold,
the day cometh,
that shall burn
as an oven;
and all
the proud,
yea,
and all that
do wickedly,
shall be stubble:
and the day
that cometh
shall burn them up,
saith the LORD
of hosts,
that it
shall leave them neither root
nor branch.
And love
the uppermost rooms
at feasts,
and the chief seats
in the synagogues,
And greetings
in the markets,
and
to be called
of men,
Rabbi, Rabbi.
But be not
ye called Rabbi:
for one
is your Master,
even Christ;
and all
ye are brethren.
Neither be
ye called masters:
for one
is your Master,
even Christ.
But
he that is greatest
among you
shall be
your servant.
And whosoever
shall exalt himself
shall be abased;
and he
that shall humble himself
shall be exalted.
For from within,
out of the heart
of men,
proceed evil thoughts,
adulteries,
fornications,
murders,
Thefts,
covetousness,
wickedness,
deceit,
lasciviousness,
an evil eye,
blasphemy,
pride,
foolishness:
And he
said
unto them
in his doctrine,
Beware
of the scribes,
which love
to go in long clothing,
and love salutations
in the marketplaces,
And the chief seats
in the synagogues,
and the uppermost rooms
at feasts:
He hath shewed strength
with his arm;
he hath scattered
the proud
in the imagination
of their hearts.
He hath put down
the mighty
from their seats,
and exalted them
of low degree.
Woe unto you,
Pharisees!
for ye
love the uppermost seats
in the synagogues,
and greetings
in the markets.
When
thou art
bidden
of any man
to a wedding,
sit not down
in the highest room;
lest a
more honourable man than
thou
be bidden of him;
And
he that
bade thee
and him
come
and say
to thee,
Give this man place;
and
thou begin
with shame
to take
the lowest room.
Beware
of the scribes,
which desire
to walk
in long robes,
and love greetings
in the markets,
and the highest seats
in the synagogues,
and the chief rooms
at feasts;
Professing themselves
to be wise,
they became fools,
Being filled
with all unrighteousness,
fornication,
wickedness,
covetousness,
maliciousness;
full of envy,
murder,
debate,
deceit,
malignity;
whisperers,
Backbiters,
haters of God,
despiteful,
proud,
boasters,
inventors
of evil things,
disobedient
to parents,
And
if some of the branches
be broken off,
and thou,
being a wild olive tree,
wert
graffed in among them,
and
with them partakest
of the root
and fatness
of the olive tree;
Boast not
against the branches.
But
if thou boast,
thou bearest not
the root,
but the root thee.
Thou wilt say then,
The branches
were broken off,
that I
might be graffed in.
Well;
because
of unbelief
they were broken off,
and
thou standest by faith.
Be not highminded,
but fear:
For if God
spared not
the natural branches,
take heed lest
he also spare not thee.
For I
would not,
brethren,
that ye
should be ignorant
of this mystery,
lest
ye should be wise
in your own conceits;
that blindness
in part is happened
to Israel,
until the fulness
of the Gentiles
be come in.
For I say,
through the grace given
unto me,
to every man
that is
among you,
not
to think
of himself
more highly than
he ought to think;
but
to think soberly,
according as God
hath dealt
to every man
the measure
of faith.
Be of the same mind one
toward another.
Mind not high things,
but condescend
to men
of low estate.
Be not wise
in your own conceits.
That no flesh
should glory
in his presence.
Let no man
deceive himself.
If any man
among you
seemeth
to be wise
in this world,
let him
become a fool,
that he
may be wise.
And these things,
brethren,
I have
in a figure transferred
to myself
and to Apollos
for your sakes;
that ye
might learn
in us not
to think of men
above that which
is written,
that no one
of you
be puffed up
for one
against another.
For who
maketh thee
to differ
from another?
and
what hast
thou
that thou
didst not receive?
now
if thou
didst receive it,
why dost
thou glory,
as if
thou hadst
not received it?
Now ye
are full,
now ye
are rich,
ye have reigned
as kings
without us:
and
I would to God
ye did reign,
that we
also might reign
with you.
We are
fools
for Christ's sake,
but ye
are wise
in Christ;
we are weak,
but
ye are strong;
ye are honourable,
but
we are despised.
And
ye are puffed up,
and have not
rather mourned,
that he that
hath done this deed
might be taken away from
among you.
Your glorying
is not good.
Know
ye not
that a little
leaven leaveneth the whole lump?
Now as touching things
offered
unto idols,
we know that
we all have knowledge.
Knowledge
puffeth up,
but charity edifieth.
And
if any man
think
that he
knoweth any thing,
he knoweth
nothing yet as he
ought to know.
Wherefore let him
that thinketh
he standeth
take
heed lest
he fall.
Charity suffereth long,
and is kind;
charity envieth not;
charity vaunteth not
itself,
is not puffed up,
But
if any man
be ignorant,
let him be ignorant.
Casting
down imaginations,
and every high thing
that exalteth itself against the knowledge
of God,
and bringing
into captivity every thought
to the obedience
of Christ;
For we
dare
not make ourselves
of the number,
or compare ourselves
with some
that commend themselves:
but
they measuring themselves by themselves,
and comparing themselves
among themselves,
are not wise.
For not
he that
commendeth himself
is approved,
but whom
the Lord commendeth.
And lest
I should be
exalted above
measure
through the abundance
of the revelations,
there was given
to me a thorn
in the flesh,
the messenger
of Satan
to buffet me,
lest
I should be
exalted above measure.
For if a man
think himself
to be something,
when
he is nothing,
he deceiveth himself.
This
I say therefore,
and testify
in the Lord,
that ye
henceforth walk not
as other Gentiles walk,
in the vanity
of their mind,
Let nothing
be done
through strife
or vainglory;
but in lowliness
of mind
let each esteem other better
than themselves.
In like manner also,
that women
adorn themselves
in modest apparel,
with shamefacedness
and sobriety;
not with broided hair,
or gold,
or pearls,
or costly array;
Not a novice,
lest
being lifted up
with pride
he fall
into the condemnation
of the devil.
If any man
teach otherwise,
and consent not
to wholesome words,
even the words
of our Lord Jesus Christ,
and
to the doctrine
which is according to
godliness;
He is proud,
knowing nothing,
but doting
about questions
and strifes
of words,
whereof cometh envy,
strife,
railings,
evil surmisings,
Charge them that
are rich in
this world,
that they
be not highminded,
nor trust
in uncertain riches,
but in the living God,
who giveth us richly all
things
to enjoy;
For men
shall be lovers
of their own selves,
covetous,
boasters,
proud,
blasphemers,
disobedient
to parents,
unthankful,
unholy,
Traitors,
heady,
highminded,
lovers
of pleasures
more than lovers
of God;
My brethren,
be not
many masters,
knowing that
we shall receive
the greater condemnation.
But
he giveth more grace.
Wherefore
he saith,
God resisteth the proud,
but giveth
grace
unto the humble.
Neither as being lords over God's heritage,
but being ensamples
to the flock.
For all that is
in the world,
the lust
of the flesh,
and the lust
of the eyes,
and the pride
of life,
is not
of the Father,
but is of the world.
Because
thou sayest,
I am rich,
and increased
with goods,
and have
need of nothing;
and knowest not that
thou art wretched,
and miserable,
and poor,
and blind,
and naked:
I counsel thee
to buy
of me gold tried
in the fire,
that thou
mayest be rich;
and white raiment,
that thou
mayest be clothed,
and
that the shame
of thy nakedness
do not appear;
and anoint thine
eyes
with eyesalve,
that thou
mayest see.
How much
she hath glorified herself,
and lived deliciously,
so much torment
and sorrow
give her:
for she
saith in her heart,
I sit a queen,
and am no widow,
and shall see
no sorrow.
Therefore shall
her plagues
come in
one day,
death,
and mourning,
and famine;
and
she shall be utterly burned
with fire:
for strong
is the Lord God
who judgeth her.
