And Moses
went into the midst
of the cloud,
and gat him up
into the mount:
and Moses
was in the mount
forty days
and forty nights.
And he
was there
with the LORD forty days
and forty nights;
he did neither
eat bread,
nor drink water.
And
he wrote upon the tables
the words
of the covenant,
the ten commandments.
When
I was gone up
into the mount
to receive the tables
of stone,
even the tables
of the covenant which the LORD
made with you,
then
I abode
in the mount forty days
and forty nights,
I neither
did eat bread
nor drink water:
And
I fell down
before the LORD,
as at the first,
forty days
and forty nights:
I did
neither eat bread,
nor drink water,
because
of all your sins
which ye sinned,
in doing wickedly
in the sight
of the LORD,
to provoke him
to anger.
And
they gathered together
to Mizpeh,
and drew water,
and poured it out
before the LORD,
and fasted
on that day,
and said there,
We have sinned
against the LORD.
And Samuel
judged
the children
of Israel
in Mizpeh.
And
they took their bones,
and buried them
under a tree
at Jabesh,
and fasted seven days.
And they mourned,
and wept,
and fasted
until even,
for Saul,
and
for Jonathan his son,
and
for the people
of the LORD,
and for the house
of Israel;
because
they were fallen
by the sword.
And
when all
the people
came to cause
David to eat meat
while it
was yet day,
David sware,
saying,
So do God to me,
and more also,
if I
taste bread,
or ought else,
till the sun
be down.
David therefore besought God
for the child;
and David fasted,
and went in,
and lay all night
upon the earth.
Then said
his servants
unto him,
What thing
is this
that thou
hast done?
thou didst fast
and weep
for the child,
while it
was alive;
but
when the child
was dead,
thou didst rise
and eat bread.
And he said,
While the child
was yet alive,
I fasted
and wept:
for I said,
Who can tell
whether GOD
will be gracious to me,
that the child
may live?
But now
he is dead,
wherefore should
I fast?
can
I bring him
back again?
I shall go
to him,
but
he shall not return to me.
And he arose,
and did eat
and drink,
and went in
the strength
of that meat forty days
and forty nights
unto Horeb
the mount
of God.
They arose,
all the valiant men,
and took away
the body of Saul,
and the bodies
of his sons,
and brought them
to Jabesh,
and buried
their bones
under the oak
in Jabesh,
and fasted seven days.
Now in the twenty
and fourth day
of this month the children
of Israel
were assembled
with fasting,
and
with sackclothes,
and earth
upon them.
And the seed
of Israel
separated themselves
from all strangers,
and stood
and confessed
their sins,
and the iniquities
of their fathers.
Go,
gather
together all
the Jews
that are
present
in Shushan,
and fast
ye for me,
and neither
eat
nor drink
three days,
night or day:
I also
and my maidens
will fast likewise;
and so
will
I go in
unto the king,
which is not according to
the law:
and if I perish,
I perish.
But as for me,
when
they were sick,
my clothing
was sackcloth:
I humbled
my soul
with fasting;
and my prayer
returned
into mine own bosom.
Therefore go thou,
and read
in the roll,
which thou
hast written
from my mouth,
the words
of the LORD
in the ears
of the people
in the LORD's house
upon the fasting day:
and also
thou shalt read them
in the ears
of all
Judah that
come
out of their cities.
Then the king
went to his palace,
and passed
the night fasting:
neither were
instruments
of musick
brought
before him:
and his sleep
went from him.
And I set
my face
unto the Lord God,
to seek
by prayer
and supplications,
with fasting,
and sackcloth,
and ashes:
In those
days I Daniel
was mourning
three full weeks.
I ate no pleasant bread,
neither came flesh
nor wine
in my mouth,
neither did
I anoint myself
at all,
till three whole weeks
were fulfilled.
And
when
he had fasted
forty days
and forty nights,
he was afterward
an hungred.
Then came
to him the disciples
of John,
saying,
Why do
we and the Pharisees
fast oft,
but thy disciples
fast not?
And immediately
the spirit
driveth him
into the wilderness.
And
he was there
in the wilderness forty days,
tempted of Satan;
and was with the wild beasts;
and the angels
ministered unto him.
And the disciples
of John
and of the Pharisees
used to fast:
and they come
and say unto him,
Why do
the disciples
of John
and of the Pharisees fast,
but thy disciples
fast not?
And
she was a widow of
about fourscore
and four years,
which departed not
from the temple,
but served God
with fastings
and prayers
night and day.
And Jesus
being full of
the Holy Ghost
returned
from Jordan,
and was led
by the Spirit
into the wilderness,
Being forty days
tempted
of the devil.
And in those days
he did eat nothing:
and
when
they were ended,
he afterward hungered.
And Cornelius said,
Four days ago
I was fasting until
this hour;
and
at the ninth hour
I prayed
in my house,
and,
behold,
a man
stood
before me
in bright clothing,
And
when
they had fasted
and prayed,
and laid
their hands
on them,
they sent them away.
And
when
they had ordained them elders
in every church,
and had prayed
with fasting,
they commended them
to the Lord,
on whom they believed.
In stripes,
in imprisonments,
in tumults,
in labours,
in watchings,
in fastings;
In weariness
and painfulness,
in watchings often,
in hunger
and thirst,
in fastings often,
in cold
and nakedness.
