And Cain
said
unto the LORD,
My punishment
is greater than
I can bear.
And
among these nations
shalt
thou find
no ease,
neither shall
the sole of thy
foot
have rest:
but the LORD
shall give thee
there a trembling heart,
and failing
of eyes,
and sorrow
of mind:
And thy life
shall hang
in doubt
before thee;
and
thou shalt fear
day and night,
and shalt have
none assurance
of thy life:
In the morning
thou shalt say,
Would God it
were even!
and at even thou
shalt say,
Would God it
were morning!
for the fear
of thine heart
wherewith
thou shalt fear,
and
for the sight
of thine
eyes which
thou shalt see.
Behold,
I am vile;
what shall
I answer thee?
I will lay mine hand
upon my mouth.
Once have
I spoken;
but
I will not answer:
yea,
twice;
but I
will proceed
no further.
For my life
is spent
with grief,
and my years
with sighing:
my strength
faileth
because of mine iniquity,
and my bones
are consumed.
O lord,
rebuke me not
in thy wrath:
neither chasten me
in thy hot displeasure.
For thine arrows
stick fast in me,
and thy hand
presseth me sore.
There is no soundness
in my flesh
because of thine anger;
neither is there
any rest
in my bones
because
of my sin.
For mine iniquities
are
gone over mine head:
as an heavy burden
they are too heavy
for me.
My wounds
stink
and are
corrupt
because
of my foolishness.
I am troubled;
I am bowed
down greatly;
I go
mourning all the day long.
For my loins
are filled
with a loathsome disease:
and there is no soundness
in my flesh.
I am
feeble
and sore broken:
I have roared
by reason
of the disquietness
of my heart.
Lord,
all my desire
is before thee;
and my groaning
is not hid from thee.
My heart panteth,
my strength faileth me:
as for the light
of mine eyes,
it also is gone from me.
My lovers
and my friends
stand aloof
from my sore;
and my kinsmen
stand afar off.
They also
that seek
after my life
lay snares for me:
and
they that seek my hurt
speak
mischievous things,
and imagine deceits all
the day long.
But I,
as a deaf man,
heard not;
and
I was as a
dumb man
that openeth not
his mouth.
Thus
I was as a man
that heareth not,
and in whose mouth
are no reproofs.
For in thee,
O LORD,
do I hope:
thou wilt hear,
O Lord my God.
For I said,
Hear me,
lest otherwise
they
should rejoice over me:
when my foot slippeth,
they magnify themselves against me.
For I
am ready to halt,
and my sorrow
is continually
before me.
For I
will declare
mine iniquity;
I will be sorry
for my sin.
But mine enemies
are lively,
and
they are strong:
and
they
that hate me
wrongfully are multiplied.
They also
that
render evil
for good
are mine adversaries;
because
I follow
the thing
that good is.
Forsake me not,
O LORD:
O my God,
be not far
from me.
Make haste
to help me,
O Lord my salvation.
Have mercy
upon me, O God,
according to
thy lovingkindness:
according
unto the multitude
of thy
tender mercies
blot
out my transgressions.
Wash me
throughly from mine iniquity,
and cleanse me
from my sin.
For I
acknowledge
my transgressions:
and my sin
is ever
before me.
Against thee,
thee only,
have
I sinned,
and done
this evil
in thy sight:
that thou
mightest be justified
when
thou speakest,
and be
clear
when thou judgest.
Purge me
with hyssop,
and
I shall be clean:
wash me,
and
I shall be whiter
than snow.
Make me to hear
joy
and gladness;
that the bones which
thou hast broken
may rejoice.
Hide
thy face
from my sins,
and blot
out all mine iniquities.
Create in me a clean heart,
O God;
and renew
a right spirit
within me.
Cast me not
away from thy presence;
and take not
thy holy spirit
from me.
Restore
unto me the joy
of thy salvation;
and uphold me
with thy free spirit.
Then will
I teach transgressors
thy ways;
and sinners
shall be converted
unto thee.
Deliver me
from bloodguiltiness,
O God,
thou God
of my salvation:
and my tongue
shall sing aloud
of thy righteousness.
O Lord,
open thou
my lips;
and my mouth
shall shew
forth thy praise.
For thou
desirest not sacrifice;
else
would
I give it:
thou delightest not
in burnt offering.
The sacrifices
of God
are a broken spirit:
a broken
and a contrite heart,
O God,
thou wilt not despise.
Then said I,
Woe is me!
for I
am undone;
because
I am a man
of unclean lips,
and
I dwell
in the midst
of a people
of unclean lips:
for mine
eyes
have seen
the King,
the LORD
of hosts.
Behold,
O LORD;
for I
am in distress:
my bowels
are troubled;
mine heart
is turned within me;
for I have grievously rebelled:
abroad
the sword bereaveth,
at home there is
as death.
But
they that escape
of them shall escape,
and shall be
on the mountains like
doves
of the valleys,
all of them mourning,
every one
for his iniquity.
All hands
shall be feeble,
and all knees
shall be weak
as water.
They shall also gird themselves
with sackcloth,
and horror
shall cover them;
and shame
shall be
upon all faces,
and baldness
upon all their heads.
Destruction cometh;
and
they shall seek peace,
and there shall be none.
Mischief
shall come upon
mischief,
and rumour
shall be
upon rumour;
then shall
they seek
a vision
of the prophet;
but the law
shall perish
from the priest,
and counsel
from the ancients.
Therefore,
O thou son
of man,
speak
unto the house
of Israel;
Thus
ye speak,
saying,
If our transgressions
and our sins
be upon us,
and
we pine away in them,
how should we
then live?
They shall lick
the dust like a serpent,
they
shall move
out of their holes like worms
of the earth:
they shall be afraid
of the LORD our God,
and shall fear
because of thee.
When Simon Peter
saw it,
he fell down
at Jesus' knees,
saying,
Depart from me;
for I
am a sinful man,
O Lord.
Now
when
they heard this,
they were pricked
in their heart,
and said
unto Peter
and to the rest
of the apostles,
Men and brethren,
what shall
we do?
And he
trembling
and astonished said,
Lord,
what wilt thou
have me to do?
And the Lord
said unto him,
Arise,
and go
into the city,
and it
shall be told thee
what thou must do.
Then
he called for
a light,
and sprang in,
and came trembling,
and fell down
before Paul
and Silas,
Which shew
the work
of the law
written
in their hearts,
their conscience also bearing witness,
and their thoughts
the mean
while accusing
or else excusing one
another;)
But
if all prophesy,
and there come in
one that believeth not,
or one unlearned,
he is convinced
of all,
he is judged
of all:
And thus
are the secrets
of his heart made manifest;
and so
falling down
on his face
he will worship God,
and report
that God
is in you
of a truth.
